A number of dedicated facilities are required for a severe asthma clinic, ranging from the basic to the specialised. Physical rooms and space are required for patient consultations and meeting rooms for multidisciplinary case review. Rapid access and telephone support are necessary for early intervention during acute exacerbations. A pulmonary function testing laboratory is required for assessment of lung function (McDonald et al. 2011).
Relatively minimal equipment is required. This includes basic life support equipment, spirometry equipment, placebo inhalers for technique assessment, peak expiratory flow meters, symptom diaries, action plan templates and educational/informational brochures relevant to different aspects of asthma.
Capability to perform phenotyping assessments includes access to FeNO measurement and sputum induction / quantification and a full blood count to obtain blood eosinophil levels is useful for clinical management (McDonald et al. 2011).
Additional services may be available in the broader hospital / clinic context. These include access to radiology procedures, a sleep laboratory and a hospital pharmacy (McDonald et al. 2011).
